Organization: SAFE- Scrubs Addressing the Firearm Epidemic. SAFE is a group of doctors, nurses, medical students and other health care professionals dedicated to addressing the public health crisis of gun violence in America. SAFE was founded at Stanford University School of Medicine in 2018 and expanded in 2019 to over 50 US Medical Schools.
Web address: www.standsafe.org
Description of activities: SAFE's activities:
Advancing research in gun violence prevention
Educating health care providers and students about the latest research in gun violence prevention and when and how to discuss firearms with patients
Supporting evidence based policies to reduce firearm injury and death
Medical Specialty needed: All specialties welcome
Location: We mainly communicate by email and have occasional meetings and conferences at Stanford. So most of the activity is in your own home or locally. We plan occasional events out of the area- for example we had a press conference at the US Capitol in DC in June 2019 with Rep Jackie Speier and other members of Congress advocating for federal funding of gun violence research.
Time Required: Depends on your interest. We would welcome simply adding you to our SAFE supporter email list. By joining the list you would get occasional emails from the SAFE leadership team with updates on what we are working on and any local events of interest. If you wanted to get more involved with working on projects we would welcome that too.
Volunteer: This is volunteer work
Malpractice Insurance: None needed
